Graphic designer

The Graphic Designer is an entry-level position in the creative department.  The designer works independently on assigned projects, or as a member of a project team.  The designer works up concepts and fulfills layout assignments according to supplied strategic and creative input.  The designer may, on occasion, work directly with account service, or with production artists and outside contractors (freelancers and vendors) to complete design requirements or supervise in-house production, but more typically works under the direction of an art director or creative director.  Reports to the creative director.

Essential Functions
  • Knowledge of production processes, with experience using in digital illustration and layout software including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and other industry design and production software. Familiarity with typestyles, type design and type specification; stock photography; computer retouching and image manipulation; art direction of original photography; and good communication skills are desirable.

  • Ideal candidates have reasonable drawing skills, rudimentary knowledge of printing processes and specifications; paper specification; ink specification.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides design and illustration (digital and/or traditional) from conception to completion as required.
  • Works with appropriate teams to concept and complete assigned projects and campaigns.
  • Assists account teams with presentations for creative and new business pitches.
  • Works with independent contractors (freelance illustrators, photographers, etc.) as required per assignment, under supervision of designated art director/creative director, and in conjunction with account coordinators to meet assigned deadlines.
  • Maintains high skill levels in software programs required to perform assigned job functions; takes training in the use of new design and illustration software as the agency requires.
  • Assists in archiving and maintaining digital files, project hard copies, photography, illustrations, logo art, typestyles, historical collateral samples, etc., of client materials and resources, and in maintaining a log of said archives to assist other department members in locating necessary files and references.
  • Maintains current computer software skills compatible with the needs of other creative team members.
  • Notifies designated purchasing personnel or creative director when hardware/software requires updating or servicing. 
  • Maintains internal and off-site digital file backups for in-progress jobs; uploads completed project files to agency Digital Asset Management archive system.
  • Maintains reasonable inventory of necessary art supplies for fulfillment of design responsibilities.

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Physical Demands

  • This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required.
  • This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Typical days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

Travel

Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel to be expected.

Experience

  • Strong creative ability and computer graphics skills.

  • Professional demonstrated experience with InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Dreamweaver

  • Experience with digital illustration and layout software including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, QuarkXpress and other industry design and production software

  • Detail-oriented, self-motivated and able to multi-task in deadline driven environment.

  • Drawing skills; printing processes and specification; paper specification; ink specification; familiarity with typestyles, type design and type specification; stock photography; computer retouching and image manipulation; art direction of original photography

  • Ability to accept constructive feedback, prioritize workload and solve problems quickly.

  • Interact in a team environment with other agency team members to achieve efficient, seamless workflow. 

  • Professional communication skills

 

Education 

Associates degree or BA degree in Graphic Design/Graphic Arts with course work in web development required. A minimum of two years’ experience with a print shop, or design experience with an ad agency or design firm preferred.

Patrick Foley

Patrick has over 25 years’ experience in marketing and advertising. A Mass Communications/Marketing graduate of Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa, Patrick has spent the majority of his career with Blue Earth Marketing. Patrick started in the TV/Radio broadcast industry as a commercial writer-news producer for KCAU-ABC affiliate in Sioux City, Iowa; eventually moving into a business development role as a Senior Account Manager. In 2000, Patrick was recruited by Waitt Media of Omaha, Nebraska to market their broadcast TV-Radio, Billboard, and internet properties to regional clients. In 2004, Patrick was recruited to help launch Blue Earth Marketing as an Account/Project Manager.

Patrick primarily account/project manages existing clients but also serves as the Business Development Director. Additionally, Patrick works with clients on developing strategic marketing plans and advertising campaigns and assists the agency with creative copywriting, media planning, media buying, video/TV/Radio production services.
